Die Ausstellung zeigt Arbeiten, die im Rahmen des Künstlerprogramms in der Akademie für Suffizienz in Reckenthin entstanden sind. Diesmal wurde ein internationales Team eingeladen, für vier Wochen in der Prignitz zum diesjährigen Thema ‚Anstrengung‘ zu arbeiten. Viele der Arbeiten, die uns versorgen, werden heute von Maschinen verrichtet, die meist viel Energie verbrauchen – mit negativen Folgen für die Umwelt. Was ist für uns heute anstrengend, wie gehen wir mit Anstrengungen um?

Lucas Souza gestaltet skulpturale Installationen mit Textilien und strebt eine Wiederherstellung der in unserem Überkonsum verloren gegangenen Verbindung mit ihnen an. Triviale Dinge des Alltags werden von Agnes Wojtas in Kombination mit gefundenem Holz aus der Umgebung zu Objekten arrangiert. Ingrid Bittar sammelt aus der lokalen Flora und dem Boden Material, mit dem sie experimentiert, um es in der Darstellung ihrer Eindrücke von der Region zu verarbeiten.

Akademie für Suffizienz – nutzen, was da ist
Die Akademie für Suffizienz im ländlichen Brandenburg bietet Anregung und Raum, um Wirtschaft zu reflektieren und zu gestalten. Sie ist dafür eingerichtet, Alternativen in Produktion, Verteilung und Versorgung zu erleben. Dabei stützt sie sich auf regionalen Austausch und auf Suffizienz als Leitbild materieller Bewirtschaftung. Die Infrastruktur und die Ausstattung spiegeln diese Prinzipien, machen sie im Alltag erfahrbar.

The exhibition presents works that were created within the framework of the artists’ program at the Akademie für Suffizienz in Reckenthin.

This time, an international group was invited to work for four weeks on this year’s topic: “Effort.” Much of the work that takes care of us today is done by machines, which generally need a lot of energy—with negative consequences for the environment. What requires effort of us today and how do we deal with making an effort?

Lucas Souza designs sculptural installations with textiles and strives to reproduce the connection with them that we have lost as a result of our overconsumption. Agnes Wojtas arranges trivial things from day-to-day life in combination with found wood from the surroundings to create objects. Ingrid Bittar collects material from the local flora and the ground and experiments with it so as to process it in depicting her impressions of the region.

The Akademie für Suffizienz—Use What There Is
The Akademie für Suffizienz in rural Brandenburg offers inspiration and space to reflect and create. It is set up to experience alternatives in production, distribution, and supply. In doing so, it depends on regional exchange and sufficiency as guiding principle for managing materials. The infrastructure and the equipment at the Akademie reflect these principles and make it possible to experience them in day-to-day life.

Artist statment :

I paint to create a more positive world than the world I came from.

Although the paintings are colorful, bright, childish and fantastical, they are a direct result of a small, complex and full of land wars and conflicts, an Israeli environment where I grew up and to this day identify with its land.

Just like where I came from, the paintings on land without land, neither past, present or future, imagination and reality, positive and negative, but always a combination all.

On the technical level, I’m interested in distorting of space and narrative, light and shadow, and a healthy composition, which is the endless possibilities of the piece.

Through the variety of techniques and dimensions, as well as the use of bright and pointy colors, transitions between realistic and imaginary, the work asks the viewer to slow down and analyze the image several times from different opening points, step by step, from character to character, to get the overall picture and evaluate the whole story.

Like individual situations that converge into one complete story that can be understood in retrospect, after we scroll it several times head-on. So does the composition of the characters, shapes, dimensions and clues scattered across the canvas, in various colors and techniques, finally converging and connecting to one complete story and a retrospective message

This is a story about immortal creatures. They live on moons and meteors, until their phone alarm wakes them for work. They are cannibals or lovers or both or neither

A new exhibition by Siobhan Leddy and Benjamin Yates explores the mythology and non-verbal communication of tardigrades. These microscopic creatures have survived five mass extinctions, volcanoes, ice — even outer space. At Im Grünen Bereich, humans and tardigrades collide through a generative, ever-changing sound and video installation. cannibals lovers both neither asks how humans can communicate with nonhuman life, beyond species lines. What can we learn from these ancient creatures, well adapted to survive an oncoming climate crisis?
Through visual-to-audio mapping, the wriggling choreography of tardigrades (as seen through a microscope) is translated into an immersive soundscape. Likewise, the movement of human bodies in the exhibition space will also be mapped into sound: played together this becomes a multispecies symphony. The work will also feature video microscopy and an original tardigrade mythology, adapted from Ovid’s Metamorphosis. 
The work is a live experiment into what has been called “mimetic communication” by theorist Anna Gibbs. Non-verbal communication exists through contagion effects, in which messages are currents that pass through and affect bodies and matter. In this work, technology acts as mediator — enabling affective translation of moving bodies into sound, which are then translated back into (human) bodies.

On June 7, 2019, Yam Shalev will open the doors of his studio to the public and present a series of paintings he painted for about three months as part of the IGB project, where Yam joined the studio of Amy and Frederic and focused on creating his first solo exhibition in Berlin as part of the move to the city as a young independent artist.

Yam moved from Israel to Berlin in early 2019, to go to Europe and promote his art career on European and German stage in particular.

He was invited to present a work during the Berlin Art Week in the urban space and since then he fell in love with the city and decided to stay focused on promoting his own solo exhibition and moving to the city in particular.

As a young artist, at the age of 23, Yam was able to present his first solo exhibition in Tel Aviv in the „Art Space“ gallery and participate in several group exhibitions, including a group exhibition in the Israeli government building for the first official epilepsy day in Israel.

      Am 2. März 2019 wird Frédéric Krauke eine Dokumentation in Form
von Fotografie, Video und Installation zu seinen Performances und Erfahrungen zeigen, die er 2018 entlang der DMZ, der entmilitarisierte Zone Südkoreas gemacht hat.

Als bildender- und performance Künstler aus Berlin stammend wurde er von dem koreanischen Organisator und Performance Künstler Kim Baekki dazu eingeladen, seine Performance-Serie steps & reflections in der DMZ zu realisieren.   Über den Zeitraum von einer Woche suchte er den Kontakt und die Kommunikation im Austausch mit dem koreanischen Publikum und KünstlerInnen in Seogwipo, Paju, Imjingak, Gangwon-do, Cherwon und Goseong. Erstmals performte er in Südkorea 2013, anlässlich des KEAF Performance Festival.  

„Die vielfältige Sprache traditioneller, idealistischer, abstrakter, künstlerischer und symbolischer Handlungen der Performance Kunst kann als eine Aufforderung zur Achtung der Menschlichkeit, der Freiheit des Ausdruckes und der Existenz, sowie dem Wunsch und die Hoffnung auf Frieden verstanden werden – trotz kultureller, historischer, politischer und zeitgenössische Unterschiede.“ F. On March 2, 2019, Frédéric Krauke will show documentary photographs and video and installations related to the performances and experiences he had along the DMZ, the De-Militarized Zone of South Korea, in 2018.

As visual and performing artist from Berlin, he was invited by the Korean performance artist and organizer Kim Baekki to do his performance series steps & reflections along the DMZ. Over a period of one week, he sought to make contact and enter into communication and exchange with the Korean audience, artists, and other individuals during performances in Seogwipo, Paju, Imjingak, Gangwon-do, Cherwon, and Goseong. He performed in
South Korea for the first time in 2013 on the occasion of the KEAF performance festival.

Über ‘Open Space’:

‚Open Space’ – ein Ort für Kunst, Kultur, und Experimente – wurde 1998 gegründet in der Adalbertstrasse 32 in Berlin – ein ehemals besetztes Haus – durch Philip Brehse, Minna Eichstadt, und Michael Steger (*1968; † 2017), wofür das ‚Living Theatre’ aus New York ein maßgeblichen Einfluss war.

Über zwei Jahrzehnten hat das ‚Open Space’ Kollektiv einen breiten Spektrum an Kunst- und Kulturveranstaltungen organisiert, inklusive Mauerstreifenfestivals, Theaterstücke, und Performance Kunst Festivals, mit tausenden Mitbeteiligten aus Deutschland und der ganzen Welt.

Mit dem leider viel zu frühen Tod Michael Stegers – der immer forsch, treibenden Geist von ‚Open Space’ – wurde das Schicksal des Archivs in Frage gestellt. Das ‚Open Space’ Kollektiv ist jedoch der Meinung, dass eine 20-jährige Geschichte Kunst in Berlin, die so viele Leute zusammengebracht hat, darf nicht ins Vergessenheit geraten.

Diese Veranstaltung bietet einen ersten Blick in dem jetzt so weit (halbwegs-) durchsortierten und organisierten ‚Open Space’ Archiv. Mit dieser ersten Präsentation des Archivs hoffen wir auf Anregungen und Ideen für dessen Zukunft.

About ‘Open Space’:

‘Open Space’ – a place for art, culture, and experiments – was established in 1998 at Adalbertstrasse 32 in Berlin – a former squat – by Philip Brehse, Minna Eichstadt, and Michael Steger (*1968; † 2017), for which the ‘Living Theatre’ from New York was a significant influence.

Over two decades, the ‘Open Space’ collective organized a broad spectrum of art and cultural events, including festivals on the former Berlin Wall strip, theater pieces, and performance art festivals, with thousands of participants from Germany and around the world.

With the unfortunately much too early passing of Michael Steger – the always bold, driving spirit of ‘Open Space’ – the fate of the archive has also been called into question. The ‘Open Space’ collective, however, believes that a 20-year history of art in Berlin that brought so many people together should not be allowed to fall into oblivion.

This event offers a first look into the now (semi-)sorted and organized ‘Open Space’ archive. With this first presentation of the archive, we hope for suggestions and ideas for its future.

Der Projekt- und Ausstellungsraum IM GRÜNE BEREICH öffnet sich gleich nach der Jahreswende für ein interdiziplinäres Kunst- und Performance Projekt, welches den Auftakt für weitere Aktionen im Jahr 2019 bilden wird. Künstler*innen verschiedener Gengres kommen in der Zeit vom 2. – 5. Januar 2019 zusammen und entwickeln gemeinsam, sich gegenseitig inspirierend, einen ergebnis-offenen, performativen Event.

Inmitten der Kulisse aus den ausgestellten Werken kommunizieren die Repräsentanten im Spannungsfeld Projektraum, während das Publikum dem Prozess des Entstehens, der Konzentration und Kulmination der gemeinsamen Arbeit beiwohnt.

The project and exhibition space IM GRÜNE BEREICH is opening directly after the start of the New Year for an interdisciplinary art and performance project, the prelude for further actions in 2019. Artists from various genres will come together in the time from January 2–5, 2019, and jointly, through inspiring each other, develop an open-ended, performative event.

Amidst the works exhibited, the participants communicate within the field of tension of the project space, while the audience witnesses the process of creation, the concentration, and the culmination of the joint work.
